Turn-on: Atmosphere (mind) vs. Direct (body), and how to find what really turns you on
Turn-on is one of the axes SM Personal Test uses to describe kinks: it shows whether you lean toward Atmosphere (mind) or Direct (body).
What this axis describes
This axis is about where the spark catches. Do you burn on the story in your head, a written contract, an order sent by text, dirty talk, a hypnosis game, an embarrassing setup, or on what your body feels: rope biting in, the heat of wax, the crack of a crop, ice, the tickle of a feather? The questions themselves are ordinary personality questions about whether you notice meanings and possibilities or the concrete facts in front of you. Abstract thinkers, we figure, catch fire in fantasy; concrete thinkers catch fire through the senses. That is our playful reading.
AAtmosphere (mind)
You tend to burn on the story in your head: the setup, a single line, what is going on in the other person's mind. One midday text, "When you get home tonight, kneel by the door and wait," and your whole afternoon is gone. Written slave contracts, rules about what you call each other, boss-and-assistant or master-and-butler role play, dirty talk whispered right into your ear. The anticipation before anyone lays a finger on you may be your favorite part, and contact with no script behind it can leave you wanting more.

DDirect (body)
You tend to burn on what your body feels: the pressure of rope biting into skin, the drip of low-temperature wax, the whistle of a riding crop and the sting that lands a beat later, ice, the tickle of a feather. A firm grip on your wrist speaks to you more honestly than a long preamble. Your senses run in high resolution, catching small differences in heat and pressure, and word games alone may feel like the long way round. The stronger the sensation, the more it pays to agree beforehand on how far and where not, so you can drown in it safely.

How it relates to the Big Five
The questions on this axis draw on aspects related to Openness to Experience in the Big Five. Leaning abstract loosely overlaps with interest in imagination and new ideas, and leaning concrete with trust in practical, familiar ways. Recasting that as mind-driven versus body-driven is the SM Personal Test's own game, with no academic backing.
How SM Personal Test measures it

What a boundary means
If the confidence that you lean toward one pole of Turn-on is below 75%, we do not force a call and show "boundary" instead. Personality scores cluster around the middle, so landing on the boundary is entirely natural. You can think of yourself as a switch who flips between the Atmosphere (mind) side and the Direct (body) side depending on the partner and the mood.
