Axis A1

S or M: Sadist (top) vs. Masochist (bottom), and how to tell whether you are a top or a bottom

S or M is one of the axes SM Personal Test uses to describe kinks: it shows whether you lean toward Sadist (top) or Masochist (bottom).

What this axis describes

Do you give the orders, or kneel for them? This is the biggest fork in the SM Personal Test. The questions behind it, though, are ordinary personality questions about whether you recharge around people or in time alone. People who recharge outward tend to run the room and grab the wheel, so we read them as S; people who recharge inward often find it comfortable to let someone else set the pace, so we read them as M. This is an entertainment reinterpretation, not science, and neither side outranks the other. One holds the leash, one hands it over: it takes both to make a scene.

SSadist (top)

You tend to light up when you hold the reins and drag a reaction out of someone. Pinning both wrists above their head, slipping on a blindfold and whispering "Who said you could move?", bringing someone to their knees with nothing but a low voice: those are the moments your blood runs hot. You would happily take your time watching them squirm until they say "please." The best tops, though, watch closely. They agree on a safeword and a red-yellow-green check before anything starts, and they know how every cuff and knot comes off before it goes on.

Where it tends to show

  • You are quietly proud of how low your voice goes when you say "kneel"
  • You want to watch a blindfolded partner tremble, waiting for your next move
  • "Who said you could move?" is a line you have always wanted to use
  • Before the cuffs go on, you have already decided where the key lives
  • You settle the safeword and the traffic lights before anything starts

MMasochist (bottom)

You tend to light up when you hand the reins to someone else. A collar clicking shut, wrists tied, being told to stay and not being allowed to move, having to say an embarrassing request out loud in your own words: that is when something in your head clicks over. The more you are decided for and ordered around, the more your shoulders drop. It may look passive, but how much you hand over is your call. Knowing that one word, red, stops everything is exactly what lets a bottom sink so deep.

Where it tends to show

  • Imagining the click of a collar closing makes your breath go shallow
  • Told to stay, you feel you could wait for as long as it takes
  • You long to be tied at the wrists with nothing left to decide
  • Being made to say "please" gets you every time
  • Knowing "red" stops everything is what lets you hand it all over

How it relates to the Big Five

The questions on this axis measure something close to Extraversion in the Big Five model widely used in psychology. Linking that to S or M is the SM Personal Test's own playful twist; there is no research saying extraverts are tops. The questions and cutoffs are also our own.

How SM Personal Test measures it

The questions themselves are ordinary personality questions. For your public-face result, we pick 6 to 10 questions that feed into S or M from a pool of 16, choosing each one based on your earlier answers (adaptive testing). The questions on this axis stop once the estimate is precise enough.

For your hidden-face result, S or M is measured again with 3 questions about how things feel to you on your own, the feelings that linger afterward, and what goes through your mind. Because public and hidden faces sit on the same axis, you can see exactly how far your public character and your private desires drift apart.

What a boundary means

If the confidence that you lean toward one pole of S or M is below 75%, we do not force a call and show "boundary" instead. Personality scores cluster around the middle, so landing on the boundary is entirely natural. You can think of yourself as a switch who flips between the Sadist (top) side and the Masochist (bottom) side depending on the partner and the mood.

Types on each side

What is your kink type?

From ordinary personality questions, we expose your Public face (the play style others see) and your Hidden face (the craving you keep to yourself) on the same axes. Holding the rope or tied up in it? Doing the teasing or begging for it? Adults only (18+), free, no sign-up, about 3 minutes for the quick test.

Expose my kink

An adults-only (18+) entertainment quiz. It is not a medical or psychological diagnosis.

Are you 18 or older?

SM Personal Test is adult entertainment that openly covers BDSM, fetishes and play. It is not available to anyone under 18.

We write about toys, rope, dirty talk and teasing at the level of an adult how-to guide (no depictions of sex itself). Results are not a medical or psychological diagnosis, just play for consenting adults.
