Pace: Grooming (ritual) vs. Wild (impulse), and whether you like it slow and ritual or wild and spontaneous
Pace is one of the axes SM Personal Test uses to describe kinks: it shows whether you lean toward Grooming (ritual) or Wild (impulse).
What this axis describes
This axis is about whether you train it in slowly or catch fire on the spot. Are you Grooming, stacking up master-slave contracts, nightly check-ins, a chastity key held for weeks, ties that get a little harder each time? Or are you Wild: grabbing a wrist the second your eyes meet, punishing a provocation right there and then, a pre-agreed ambush game? The questions behind it are ordinary personality questions about whether you plan first or go with the flow. Planners make natural trainers and improvisers natural wildcards: a slightly cheeky reading, but a convincing one.
GGrooming (ritual)
You tend to burn on routines, rules and rituals built up over time. Every session opens the same way, a collar fastened and a formal greeting. A report before bed every night, and any broken rule settled up at the weekend. A tie or a stretch of waiting that was too much last week becomes possible this week, and the whole journey of getting there is the fun. Set signals and set steps let you sink in without worry; unscripted turns may throw you a little.
Where it tends to show
- You feel the urge to write the house rules down and pin them up
- Starting with a collaring ritual gets you in the mood
- You like stepping up the waiting or the ties one level at a time
- You want to grow it with nightly reports or a shared diary
- You like setting a goal for next time
WWild (impulse)
You tend to burn on the mood of the moment, instinct and happy accidents. Pulling someone over your knee the second they mouth off, a chase that ends with someone pinned against the wall, or deliberately provoking until it happens to you. You catch fire when the air suddenly shifts, not when a plan says so, and a tightly scripted scene can actually cool you off. With all that momentum, keep your safeword short enough to say on reflex, and add a no-words signal such as two taps, so you can go wild without a second thought.
Where it tends to show
- The more unplanned it gets, the hotter it gets
- You set rules and then forget them halfway through
- One cheeky remark and you want the punishment right then, either way round
- Why spend ages preparing when you could pin them down now?
- You like it different every time
How it relates to the Big Five
The questions on this axis draw on ideas related to Conscientiousness in the Big Five. Leaning toward planning loosely overlaps with valuing order and organization, and leaning toward improvising with valuing flexibility and spontaneity. Recasting that as ritual versus impulse is the SM Personal Test's own game, with no research behind it.
How SM Personal Test measures it
The questions themselves are ordinary personality questions. For your public-face result, we pick 6 to 10 questions that feed into Pace from a pool of 16, choosing each one based on your earlier answers (adaptive testing). The questions on this axis stop once the estimate is precise enough.
For your hidden-face result, Pace is measured again with 3 questions about how things feel to you on your own, the feelings that linger afterward, and what goes through your mind. Because public and hidden faces sit on the same axis, you can see exactly how far your public character and your private desires drift apart.
What a boundary means
If the confidence that you lean toward one pole of Pace is below 75%, we do not force a call and show "boundary" instead. Personality scores cluster around the middle, so landing on the boundary is entirely natural. You can think of yourself as a switch who flips between the Grooming (ritual) side and the Wild (impulse) side depending on the partner and the mood.
