“Top in Public, Bottom in Private” is one of SM Personal Test's gap patterns between your Public face (the play style others see) and your Hidden face (the desire you feel). It describes people who are Sadist (top) on the outside, Masochist (bottom) on the inside.
What is this pattern?
In public you run the room like a born top, the kind who makes "Kneel" sound natural, yet when you fantasize alone you are the one being collared and given orders. This may be the most fun gap in the whole SM Personal Test. People keep telling you that you are obviously a top, while inside you are waiting for the moment you put down the crop and someone else ties your wrists. The commanding character and the urge to surrender are both part of you.
When it tends to show
This side tends to show up when you want to hand over everything, collar and all, such as when someone you trust grabs your wrist and takes a firm lead, or on a night when you are tired of making decisions.
Tips for living with it
For someone who always leads, handing over control takes a partner you trust and a clear signal. Set a safeword and build the kind of relationship where you can say "tonight you hold the key," and you get to enjoy both sides as a switch. Start small: just a blindfold, or just the wrists.
How it is detected
You fall into this pattern when S or M alone switches from Sadist (top) in the public face to Masochist (bottom) in the hidden face. We only call it a flip when the estimated probability that the directions truly differ is 75% or higher; the other three axes keep their direction.
